Southside Johnny

A site focused on the Jersey Shore sound would never be complete without a nod to Southside Johnny. The front man to Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes has been credited by fellow musician Jon Bon Jovi as being the reason for his own singing. Following Bruce Springsteen out of the Jersey Shore music scene in the mid-1970′s, Southside released his first three albums: I Don’t Want to Go Home in 1976, This Time It’s For Real in 1977, and Hearts of Stone in 1978.Southisde collaborated with Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt on several of the albums’ songs, and the Van Zandt penned “I Don’t Want To Go Home” ultimately became Southside’s signature song along with other noteworthy tunes such as “The Fever,” “Talk to Me,” and “This Time It’s For Real.”In 1982 Rolling Stone Magazine listed the album Hearts of Stone as one of the “top 100 albums” to be released during the 1970s and 1980s, and with songs like the title track it’s easy to agree that Southside truly personifies Heartland rock. This Time It’s For Real Baby, you can’t slow me downI’ve come too far to ever turn back nowI’ve spent my whole life workingWorking so hard for it, yes I didBaby, I changed the odds todayGonna push the scales, baby, till they tilt my wayPass that bottle, deal the cards’Cause I ain’t waiting no more, no moreYou can say what you want toBut there ain’t nothing gonna change my mindBaby, this time it’s for realI know, I know it, babyThis time it’s for realIt’s got to be real, babyThe time has come and I’ve paid the billI’ll keep the glass raised ’till my cup is filledI’m gonna keep on shaking’Till it all comes tumblin’ downYes I will, babyBaby, don’t give me no adviceGonna shoot it all, baby, on a roll of the diceWhen you start with nothingYou ain’t got nothing to loseListen, babyWell you can do what you want toBut there ain’t nothing gonna stop me nowBaby, this time it’s for realI know, I know it babyThis time it’s for realI said, said come onGot to be, babyYou can stay if you wannaIt don’t make a bit of difference to meBaby, this time it’s for realI know, I know it babyThis time it’s for realI know it’s got to be real nowI know it this time, babyI know it, come on, babyI know, I know, I know itBaby, this time it’s for realI know it’s got to be realGot to be, got to be realI know itIt’s got to be, got to be real
