Bruce Springsteen
What would a site focused on New Jersey rock be without making its first post about the quintessential Jersey rocker himself: Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen, nicknamed “The Boss” personifies the Jersey sound since he is most widely accredited with single-handedly putting a stamp on Heartland rock like no one before or since. His debut album Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ was released in 1973 and it quickly established him as the powerhouse that was about to be unleashed. Springsteen’s style is classified as “lyrical poeticism mixed with folk rock” as evidenced by the track “Blinded by the Light.” But it was years later (when Springsteen released Born to Run, The River, and Born in the U.S.A) that he honed his “working class” style and became cemented as a pop culture icon something that he continues to enjoy to this day.And so we print the lyrics from the song that seems to exemplify Springsteen’s own slant on Heartland rock.Born to RunIn the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway american dreamAt night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machinesSprung from cages out on highway 9,Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin out over the lineBaby this town rips the bones from your backIts a death trap, it’s a suicide rapWe gotta get out while were youngcause tramps like us, baby we were born to runWendy let me in I wanna be your friend I want to guard your dreams and visionsJust wrap your legs round these velvet rimsAnd strap your hands across my enginesTogether we could break this trapWell run till we drop, baby well never go backWill you walk with me out on the wirecause baby Im just a scared and lonely riderBut I gotta find out how it feelsI want to know if love is wild, girl I want to know if love is realBeyond the palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrorsAnd the boys try to look so hardThe amusement park rises bold and starkKids are huddled on the beach in a mistI wanna die with you wendy on the streets tonightIn an everlasting kissThe highways jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive Everybodys out on the run tonight but there’s no place left to hideTogether wendy well live with the sadnessIll love you with all the madness in my soulSomeday girl I don’t know when were gonna get to that placeWhere we really want to go and well walk in the sunBut till then tramps like us baby we were born to run
